html coding is displaying instead of web pages Posted: 25 Feb 2005 10:18 PM |
I am having a problem that started in the past week or so. The first time I noticed it, I ignored it, as I had other fires to tend to. Today, however, I went to try to find something and found the files really are all displaying the HTML coding instead of displaying as web pages.
I am running SurfSaver version 6.0.2.745 on a WinXP (SP2) box with all applicable updates and patches installed. I uninstalled and re-installed SurfSaver. I am also running askSam 5.1 and askSam 6 (beta) on the machine. The latest release of askSam 6 features a function similar to SurfSaver. Could that be causing some kind of problem?
A sample of the items, as they are being displayed in SurfSaver can be viewed at: http://www.scoop0901.net/surfsaver_problem.png
Ideas anyone? |

This has been a big problem with SurfSaver 6. I can no longer save "ASP" generated pages or dynamically created pages. I usually save a copy of my "ONLINE" banking transactions but I no longer can do that.
I have emailed Tech Support but I never get a reply. In version 2.3 this all worked, and Tech Supprt was responsive.
I liked the enhancements in version 6, but the program is not reliable for saving web pages.

Sadly, Bob, I've emailed tech support a few times since being contacted off-list to send them a sample of the databases with the problem (which was all of them!). I sent some of the databases, as some are personal and some contain other information that I can't release), and have emailed to follow-up on the issues. I've not heard anything back, including, "Sorry, but we are still looking into this." I did speak with Ben on the phone one day and he said it could be a problem related to WinXP SP2, but couldn't confirm it at that point, as he did not have SP2 installed on the computer he was at during the conversation.
As far as *.asp, *.shtml, and other formatted pages, yes, I agree, it is a problem. I use *.shtml pages on most of the sites I work on, as I do a lot of SSI (server-side includes) to generate content. It's easier for me when I am giving others permissions to make changes to live material. They are allowed into specific directories, and as the updated material is changed, it is pulled to the page, and I don't have to worry about them changing keywords, descriptions, or anything else they shouldn't be messing with.
I'd like to be able to use SurfSaver, which is the reason I made the purchase of a few copies about one month ago. The way I've been handling things for a few years, and which I've been relegated back to doing, is hitting my "Convert Page to PDF" button from Acrobat and saving everything in PDF format. That's fine, but then I lose a lot of the inherent links on the page, there's bloat, and other issues. I thought SurfSaver would be an answer. I did try several other programs over the years, including MyBase, which has a web page grabber. I just didn't particularly care for the interface for the web page grabber, and how it displayed in MyBase when doing large projects. SurfSaver handled things slightly differently, but had a somewhat better interface. |

Looks like these comments are all from 2005.
I am having trouble in 2009, including all the hundreds of web pages I have saved through the years now being displayed in HTML. Am using XP, SP2, buthave been using this for a couple of years and trouble just currently blossomed -- perhaps IE version??
