askSam build 143 buttons lost Posted: 29 Jul 2009 01:05 AM |
(I had to start a new thread because of a NULL error in the build 141 thread.)
Build 143 loses customization of existing toolbars (when are they going to fix this?) AND loses any new toolbars. Yes, I would like to see your workaround. If askSam cannot get this piece of junk working as advertised I may have to go back Ver. 6 permanently! I understand that there are potentional replacements for askSam. |

I will walk through the entire work-around:
- I am running the latest build (143) of AS under Windows XP home.
- Do not use the Start Page for this procedure. Use one of you own files.
- At the end of each toolbar there is a triangle pointing downwards. Left mouse click.
- "Add or Remove Buttons" is displayed. Hover your pointer over this text.
- A small box is displayed with a choice between "Standard" or "Customize...", Click on "Customize...".
- A dialog box titled "Customize" appears. There are four tabs: Toolbars, Commands, Keyboard, and Options.
- In the Toolbars tab I have everything but Reports Output checked (i.e., Menu Bar, Standard, Formatting).
- Left click on the Commands tab. In the left box are categories for the commands which appear on the right. (I usually select All Commands from the left hand list, but I doubt that this matters.) Any command button can be added to any toolbar.
- By dragging and dropping a button to a toolbar, you will add this button to that toolbar, BUT...
- DO NOT CUSTOMIZE THE FORMATTING TOOLBAR. If you do it seems that after closing and opening AS, all customizations, not just to the Formatting toolbar, will disappear. This includes any new toolbars that you have created.
- This is key, so I repeat: You can drag any button to any toolbar except Formatting.
- One last suggestion: when I was working this out, I decided I could save time by customizing the ones on the "Start Page". I don't remember exactly what happen, but something didn't work. Work on a new database.
- I customized the standard toolbar and created a new toolbar 4 to 6 weeks ago. Folloning the above, I have had no problems since.
Good luck.

Phillip,
I finally got around to using your workaround and am finally replying to your post. Your workaround worked for me. Thank you.
Rant:
I would like to know when askSam is going to make askSam 7 work as advertised. This is now a very old problem, and comes close to false advertising. As usual, askSam is not giving any answers in a timely manner. I wonder how many computer programmers they have and how many are working on this and other bugs.
I want the capabilities that askSam *claimed* for askSam 7!
End of Rant. |

Build 143 has deleted my custom toolbar Posted: 28 Oct 2009 09:21 AM |
askSam pro v 7.0.2.143 which I installed five months ago has spontaneously deleted my custom toolbar and refuses to save toolbar modifications. I customize the toolbars and shut down the program. When I reopen askSam it reverts to the default toolbar provided with the program. Please advise regarding a solution. I am running Vista Home Premium. This previously occurred with build 137 last year and you fixed it with build 138.
The only change in my computer system since this problem has recurred is installation of a Definition update for Windows Defender KB915597 1.69.144.0 - is this merely a coincidence? |

What are potential askSam replacements? Posted: 28 Oct 2009 09:28 AM |
What are the potential askSam replacements? If there is something that organizes information as flexibly and searches like askSam but is more stable and less buggy that would be the ticket.
To askSam tech support: I have been a long time user of askSam and it has been an excellent information organizer but the bugs are frustrating and waste signficant amounts of my time. Recently I had to recover a considerable amount of corrupted data and now this toolbar issue is holding up my work progress. |
